How we work

Seven things we do not bend on.

We wrote them down because they are the reason the work is any good.

  1. Strategy first, then the creative.

Before a logo, a campaign, or a deck, we work out what is true, what people need to believe, and what has to change. The creative follows from that, and its job is to make the clarity impossible to ignore.

  2. Every project starts from a blank page.

Nothing comes off a shelf. Each project is built around the organization, the challenge, and the audience in front of us, and it starts from zero every time.

  3. Our yeses mean yes. Our nos mean no.

PILLAR has turned down as much work as it has taken. If we are not the right people for what you need, we will say so, at our own expense, and help you find the people who are.

  4. If you are thinking it, we will address it.

Showing the math, naming the complications, answering the hard question before you have to ask it. We would rather lose a project over an honest answer than win one by dodging the question.

  5. The team should feel like it was always yours.

The line between our team and yours exists on paper. In the work it should disappear. We learn the culture and the people, and we build relationships that outlast the scope.

  6. Everyone belongs here.

PILLAR is committed to a network that reflects the full breadth of talent, perspective, and lived experience in creative and communications. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. And we go further: we seek and celebrate diversity across race, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, neurodivergence, socioeconomic background, immigration status, language, religion or lack of it, body size, family structure, and political perspective.

  7. The range is the point.

The organizations we work with include advocacy groups, global justice organizations, progressive and nonpartisan policy institutions, LGBTQ+ affirming organizations, corporate brands, bipartisan entities, and government agencies. Some of that work is deeply mission-driven; some of it means representing an organization's voice with neutrality. When PILLAR assembles a team, we consider skills, availability, fit, and enthusiasm, because people should be on work they care about. No one in the network is matched with work that is not right for them, and PILLAR respects the autonomy, boundaries, and judgment of every person in it. The best creative work comes from teams that do not all look the same, think the same, or come from the same places.
